How should i look after and clean my jewellery?
General maintenance and care:
Store your jewellery separately and in its original packaging as metals and stones can scratch when they come into contact with each other.
Do not let your jewellery come into contact with household detergents; undiluted or strong solutions or other chemical products and take care when spraying perfume and hairspray.
Silver does tarnish eventually with time and wearing, this is not a manufacturing defect but a property of silver metal. In the first instance you can use a silver polishing cloth to bring back the shine to the surface of your jewellery.
Sterling Silver and copper accented pieces:
Line a glass or plastic dish with a slightly crumpled piece of aluminium foil (shiny side up). Lay your jewellery on the aluminium, making sure it touches the aluminium. Sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda over it then pour enough boiling water to immerse the jewellery. Move the piece(s) around gently with a wood or plastic utensil to ensure that all of the surfaces come in contact with the aluminium. Rinse the jewellery under tap water. To ensure that you don't lose small pieces like earrings and pendants, put a sieve over the drain to catch whatever may slip off your fingers. Wipe/ pat the pieces gently with an absorbent towel and polish with a soft cloth Note: Pearls, Turquoise and other porous stones and oxidised silver jewellery should not be cleaned in this way.
Oxidised (blackened) jewellery:
Oxidising is a surface treatment that has been applied to the silver to turn the item to a grey/black colour. The oxidisation is not permanent and will start to burnish slightly on raised areas over time. This is seen as a positive feature, as the surface individually evolves through your use. To prolong the black finish it is advised that you store your oxidised jewellery separately from your other jewellery to avoid it rubbing against any sharp surfaces. Oxidised items rarely need cleaning and any dirt that does occur inside any nooks and crannies can be cleaned with a dry, very soft brush (e.g. kids toothbrush) or with a soft damp cloth and some soapy water. Do not use any hard brushes or abrasives which may scratch away at the surface. Do not immerse oxidized items in chemicals such as jewellery cleaning solutions as this will also remove the oxidisation completely. Angela Evans Jewellery is able to re-oxidise items if desired.
Is the jewellery solid silver and is it hallmarked?
All the jewellery is solid sterling silver (925), however some feature solid copper granulated balls.
They are stamped with the makers mark and hallmarked at the Edinburgh Assay Office when they above the legal weight threshold.
About ring sizes
Angela Evans uses UK ring sizing and offer full standard sizes J – S online. Orders outside this and half sizes can be made to order. If you’re uncertain of the size of ring you require please call into our workshop and gallery where you can be measured accurately or alternatively pop into your local jewellers where you can be measured. Please remember that a deep band width will often require a larger size ring. Please note that there may an additional charge to alter the ring size from the one ordered.
Can I commission you to make a special piece?
Angela offers a bespoke design service at the Caernarfon shop. Please contact us for more information.
